The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), a leading think-tank, has published a report into social care, The Generation Strain: Collective Solutions to Care in an Ageing Society.

The report identifies a ‘family care gap’ which is developing as the number of older people in need of care outstrips the number of younger adults and children who are able to provide it.

Clare McNeil, IPPR senior research fellow, said:

The supply of unpaid care to older people with support needs by their adult children will not keep pace with future demand. Thousands of people in their 60s and 70s today could be left to cope on their own when they need care in the future.

Bluebird Care can help care for elderly relatives by providing high quality care services in the comfort of their own home. We offer a unique service of tailored care visits from 30 minutes of care to 24 hour live-in care.

The research shows that people in the UK tend to receive home care until their needs become more intensive, with many people increasingly preferring to pay for professional services rather than relying on family members.

As highlighted in the report, home care costs over £10,000 a year less than residential care and also removes the worry of having to move a loved one to a care home.
