Sammie Stanley has been a Care Assistant at Bluebird Care for 1 year 3 months She has a passion for crocheting and recently made over 100 crochet poppies as gifts to her customers.
Sammie realised due to Covid-19 restrictions usual poppy sellers will not be going door to door this November, and so she decided to make ones that her customers will be able to re-use every year.
Sammie said:
“A lot of our customers will relay wartime stories, they love having a poppy in remembrance of this tragic time or to help them remember someone they loved.
“When I made the poppies, I remembered stories my late grandparents told me about the fallen soldiers who fought for the world we live in today. It was an honour to do something so simple to say thank you to those who lost their lives protecting ours.
“I loved making them because of what it means to me. I have a stepson in the armed forces, and we go as a family to watch the remembrance Sunday parade. It always brings me to tears.
“Our customers will have a smile on their face when they receive these handmade poppies, as many of them would otherwise not be able to get one this year.”
The poppies were delivered to customers over the past week, and Sammie recieved some lovely feedback. One Bluebird customer said:
Thank you ever so much for the poppy it has brightened my day as I was worried that I wouldn't have one this year.
Another Bluebird Care customer added:
Thank you ever so much, very thoughtful of you. I will make an extra donation to the British legion via cheque.
One of Sammie’s customers had family in the military, she said:
The poppy brought a tear to her eye and a smile to my face. Remembrance Sunday is very important to me as a lot of her family served in the military
