Val, who worked as a phlebotomist at St George’s Hospital before being a doctor’s receptionist, experienced a stroke that left her paralysed on the left side of her body and affected her speech.

Val’s amazing husband Fred used to run a business, employing eight staff, however closed the business in order to care for her.

We would like to thank Val who shared a bit of her story with us:
When I was working as a receptionist, the doctor I was working with said I should go and see my GP as I was fairly regularly feeling a little unwell, however it was when I was on the phone to my daughter and collapsed that everything completely changed.

The next thing that I remember is waking up on the intensive care ward in the hospital. I learnt that I had experienced a brain aneurysm and after being discharged I experienced a few more strokes.

This first big stroke completely changed my life and that of my husband Fred overnight. I found that I was paralysed down the left side of my body which made everything very difficult.

I have help from Bluebird Care four times per day and it is lovely to have the regular visits from such friendly people! As well as helping, my Care Assistants are very much like my friends!
