Enjoy National Gardening Week this April. Discover the benefits of gardening and our top tips on how to get involved, whether you have access to a garden or not.

Did you know that Monday 26th April to Sunday 2nd May 2021 is National Gardening Week?

The Royal Horticultural Society has been encouraging and celebrating National Gardening Week since 2012, as gardening and enjoying nature can have such a positive impact on our wellbeing by giving us ‘vitamin G’ (vitamin green!).

We have had some lovely weather this April, so what better way to take in the sunshine and vitamin D than admiring or caring for your garden?

The benefits of gardening:

  • Gardening can help to reduce stress
  • Gardening can boost your mood and well-being
  • Gardening can help you have a healthy mind
  • Gardening is an enjoyable physical exercise
  • Gardening, as well as certain flowers can be nostalgic of certain smells

Top tip: If you are spending time in your garden as the weather improves, be sure to:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Take breaks often
  • Wear SPF sun ceam and a hat.

If you are caring for your garden, be sure to wear protective gloves and the correct shoes also.

…But what if I don’t have a garden?

If you don’t have a garden and want to get involved with National Gardening Week, a great way to incorporate a bit of colour into your home is to consider introducing a house plant or easily manageable window box in your space.

Certain house plants, such as spider plants or swiss cheese plants, are said to have many benefits such as helping to purify the air in your home and they don’t need watering very often.

Another way to add some greenery into your home is to grow a collection of useful herbs in a sunny windowsill. For example, basil, rosemary and thyme are easy to care for and they smell great!

With Covid-19 lockdown restrictions lifting, you can now enjoy the nature and flowers at your local park or nearest garden centre. By visiting and supporting your nearest garden centre, you are making a difference by supporting a local business after a tough lockdown.
