Joan Campbell is one of Bluebird Cares Live in Carer Experts and for the past two and half years she has been caring for our customers.  Currently she is looking after a customer who has Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.  Joan started with this customer at a time when she had just lost her husband.  This was the hardest time which caused her both stress and anxiety. However, one step at a time Joan worked with her, gained confidence, and gave her a better quality of life thanks to hard work, commitment, and patience.

When Joan began caring for the customer, she had lost all her confidence, so much so that she wouldn’t go out of her front door. So, one step at a time Joan started to work on this, giving her activities and keeping her busy. This increased from going in the garden and doing activities which gradually built her confidence. Nowadays our customer is a different person enjoying life to the full. They go out shopping together and regularly eat out at restaurants. Joans hard work has benefitted the family, they can now all go out and have family meals and days out together. They also go to the park and sit on a bench with lunch when the weather is nice, sparking positive memories about her career, and having lunch in the same place as with her colleagues in her younger years. The difference and quality of her life has improved immensely, our customers family wanted to include this in the nomination.

‘’We've been immensely happy with the care that Joan has provided. She's shown real empathy and commitment to mum, and selflessly is dedicated to improving the quality of life for her. Mum's Alzheimer's and Dementia has continued to provide challenges, Joan has continued to offer mum a high level of companionship, there's a connection and trust that exists. It's wonderful to see them smile together. We've been pleased having Joan be such a part of mum's life and look forward to that continuing. We know she has mum's best interests at heart.’’
