During Dementia Action Week, we discuss the importance of diagnosis and tailored support.

Registered Manager Jacqui McPherson says, “With one in three people in the UK living with undiagnosed dementia, now is the time to seek answers and support if you or someone you know may be affected.”

“The benefits of an accurate diagnosis are vast. For some, they discover their memory loss is not related to dementia but rather caused by medication, sleep deprivation, thyroid problems or a list of other possibilities. For others, a diagnosis of dementia means access to support including therapies, medication, accessing financial benefits they may be entitled to and being able to explain why they are not able to function as they used to.”

“We understand the importance of our Richmond & Twickenham Bluebirds having the best training to support customers with a diagnosis of dementia. Our dedicated Training Manager runs Dementia Interpreter workshops to help our Care Experts understand the world through their customers’ eyes. Our local Admiral Nurse visited our office this week to share invaluable advice on making diagnosis even more accessible, improving our care plans and supporting the goals and outcomes held by our customers with dementia.”

“Our customer Mrs P enjoyed living at home. She had regular outings to her local day centre; we supported her to retain her independence with medication management. Working alongside her GP, Admiral Nurse, Psychologist and Well-being Nurse, her care plan was frequently adjusted and eventually included personal care and nutrition support. We added illustrated signs to her walls to ensure she didn’t have to rely on the written word; these guided Mrs P to the rooms she was looking for. Her son wrote to us last month and said:

“The team at Bluebird has been incredible in helping to look after my mother who is suffering from dementia. The daily care is fantastic and the management team supporting them are brilliant. I have had quite a few occasions where I needed support urgently; they were always able to help.”

Jacqui concludes, “It is our honour to support Richmond borough residents to remain safe at home, whatever their challenges and diagnoses. Dementia and Alzheimer’s aren’t the end of independence... it's simply the start of a new chapter. With a diagnosis, you can access the best support and resources. During Dementia Action Week and throughout the year, it’s our mission to ensure as many people in our borough – from Barnes and Kew to Hampton and Teddington – receive the diagnosis and support they need.”
