We were invited to attend a Careers Day at Wardle Academy.

This event was aimed at showcasing local businesses and potential employers and apprenticeships schemes and Further Education providers that their Year 10s will have access to. The aim of the event is to increase opportunities that Year 10s can be exposed to.

This gave them the chance to see what all the options are which, in turn, will enable them to make an informed decision that can be tailored to their needs. This was to engage the local community and showcase local businesses that they could be potentially part of.

The event was also a chance to see the workings of the school and the Watergrove Trust (that manages Wardle Academy and a further 6 trust schools). The event ran all day in the pool hall of the Watergrove building.

The event met the Gatsby benchmarks of 2,3,5 and 7 and gave students a chance to meet post 16 providers of colleges, training and employers in an interactive and inspirational setting. This will enable our students to make clear and informed choices when considering their options in Year 11.

Joint Director John Keogh said

I was asked to provide some exercise that would be of interest to the student.

I created a number of shaped and coloured post its representing either customers or team members that we may have to see if the students could identify any patterns.

Of course the overidding response was that everyone was different, which was exactly the point I was trying to make.  We have to be inclusive, dynamic and diverse to reflect our community and the people within.  The students seemed to engage with that and reinforced how unique we all are.

It was also a really privileged opportunity to listen to these young people and hear about their aspirations and dreams.
