Bluebird Care Rother & Hastings is supporting Dementia Action Week 2019, an annual campaign run by the Alzheimer’s Society from 20-26 May 2019.

Dementia Action Week aims to unite individuals, workplaces and communities to take action and improve the lives of people living with dementia. According to the charity, someone in the UK develops dementia every three minutes.

The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading charity for dementia, providing information and support to individuals as well as funding vital research with the hope to create lasting change for everyone affected by dementia.

Dementia is a disease that many of our customers live with and something that our Care Assistants come across daily. In order to help give them even more of an insight into the disease, we are implementing virtual reality into the dementia training our team receive.

Using the app ‘A Walk Through Dementia’ that has been created by Alzheimer’s Research UK, we are able to provide an immersive experience for staff on induction training. This experience is designed to put our team in the shoes of someone living with dementia and is extremely effective.

Care Manager Jess commented:

I tried out the experience as we were rolling it out and actually found it quite emotional! The experience doesn’t just ‘show’ you what it is like to live with the disease, but plunges you right into it. Using this app in our training will make a big difference to the care we provide our customers because it will help our team be even more understanding when caring for their customers. I am looking forward to introducing this to each of our Care Assistants and seeing the positive impact it will have to the training we provide!

We support people living with many conditions and are experts at supporting those living with dementia. If you would like to find out more about the care we provide, please call our team on 01797 225 797.
