Urinary tract infection (UTI) prevention

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are common among older adults, but there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk.

Bluebird Care Rushcliffe & Melton's dedicated team of Care Experts will be there to support you and minimise your risk of contracting a UTI. Here are some practical tips to help you prevent UTIs and maintain urinary health.

1. Stay Hydrated
  • Drink Plenty of Fluids: Aim to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. Staying well-hydrated helps flush bacteria out of your urinary tract.
  • Limit Diuretics: Reduce your intake of caffeine and alcohol, as they can increase urination and lead to dehydration.
2. Practice Good Hygiene
  • Wipe Properly: Always wipe from front to back after using the toilet to prevent bacteria from the anal area from spreading to the urethra.
  • Clean Gently: Wash your genital area with mild soap and water daily, but avoid harsh soaps and douching which can irritate the urethra.
3. Urinate Regularly and Completely
  • Don’t Hold It: Urinate as soon as you feel the urge. Holding urine can allow bacteria to grow in the bladder.
  • Empty Bladder Fully: Take your time to ensure your bladder is completely empty when you urinate.
4. Adjust Diet
  • Eat Cranberries: Incorporate cranberries or cranberry juice into your diet, as they may help prevent UTIs by making it harder for bacteria to adhere to the urinary tract.
  • Probiotics: Include probiotic-rich foods like yogurt in your diet to promote a healthy balance of bacteria in the body.
5. Avoid Irritants
  • Skip Irritating Products: Avoid using feminine hygiene sprays, powders, and scented personal care products around the genital area.
  • Choose Cotton Underwear: Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes to keep the genital area dry and ventilated.
6. Manage Incontinence
  • Change Often: If you use incontinence pads or briefs, change them regularly to keep the area dry and reduce the risk of infection.
  • Skin Care: Apply barrier creams if needed to protect the skin from moisture and irritation.
7. Post-Sexual Activity Care
  • Urinate After Intercourse: Make sure to urinate shortly after sexual activity to help flush out any bacteria that may have entered the urethra.
  • Clean Gently: Gently clean your genital area before and after sex.
8. Monitor Medications
  • Review with Doctor: Discuss any medications you’re taking with your GP and.or pharmacist, as some can increase the risk of UTIs. They can help adjust your medication if necessary.
9. Boost Your Immune System
  • Healthy Diet: Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support your immune system.
  • Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to keep your body strong and healthy.
10. Seek Medical Advice Promptly
  • Early Symptoms: Contact your GP if you experience symptoms of a UTI, such as a burning sensation when urinating, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or pelvic pain.
  • Regular Check-Ups: Have regular medical check-ups to monitor your overall health and address any concerns early.

By following these tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing UTIs and maintain good urinary health. Bluebird Care Rushcliffe & Melton advise you to stay hydrated, practice good hygiene, and seek prompt medical advice if you have any concerns.
