Meet Susan Stravides

What is it like to be a Live-In Carer, and how did you become a Live-In carer?

Initially, when Susan joined us in 2022, she began her Bluebird career as a home/domiciliary carer. After some time in this role, she was then offered the opportunity to help with a respite care package that led her to become a Live-In carer.

She was asked to take care of a gentleman by staying in his home for a short respite care package following a hospital stay. Following this respite package, the daughter of the gentleman asked Susan if she could take care of her father again for another short-term stay as he really enjoyed Susan’s company.

Following this experience, Bluebird spoke to Susan and asked her to consider a role as a Live-In carer that she chose to accept.

What do you enjoy about being a Live-In carer?

Even though being a domiciliary carer is great as you get to meet so many different customers, being a Live-In carer is less stressful as you are not trying to complete all your calls in a timely manner, and you get to know your customer on a deeper level. This is why Susan enjoys being a Live-In carer.

Susan enjoys Live-In care because you get to enjoy more quality time with her allocated customers. You get to know them, become a part of their family and add to their quality of life. You become more than their carer, you become their companion.

She also enjoys the work-life balance that being a Live-In carer gives her. Susan’s Live-In care schedule is 1 week on, 1 week off which means she has the extra time to spend with her family.

What does your typical Live-In carer routine look like?

Each Live-In carer routine differs from customer to customer.

Susan’s particular customer is extremely sociable, so she gets to accompany her on her weekly outgoings and social activities.

The customer that Susan takes care of has limited capabilities, so Susan’s responsibilities would be the same as taking care of her own home to take care of herself and her family. She is there for the day-to-day activities like breakfast, getting dressed and cleaning to make sure her customer is taken care of.

Why do you think others should consider Live-In care?

Susan truly believes that Live-In care is the best form of care.

She thinks Live-in care is a great option as they get to be amongst their familiar things, and they feel safe and secure. Live-in care allows the customer to maintain relationships with neighbours and the community. With live-in care, they get to continue with their social activities and attend all appointments as the Live-in carer can take them. Having a live-in carer, they can adapt to the customer’s care needs as they change. They are there for them whatever they need

Does Live-In Care sound like the right option for you and your family?
