We want you to rediscover joy at home, whether it’s discovering new hobbies together, enjoying cosy family movie nights, or simply sharing stories and laughter around the dinner table.
What is a spinal injury?
A spinal injury happens when the spinal cord is damaged, either due to something sudden, like an accident, or from a non-traumatic cause, such as a tumour or blood clot.
The spinal cord is like a messaging system for your body; it helps your brain communicate with everything else, from your muscles to your skin and even helps you sense things like temperature and texture.
If someone experiences a spinal injury, they may find it harder to move or feel sensations below the area where the injury occurred. Recovery can look different for everyone, some people may regain movement and feeling over time, while others might face more long-term or permanent changes.
Understanding the risks associated with spinal injuries
The effects of spinal injuries can be quite different for each person. If the injury is only partially damaging, there’s a chance for some recovery, though it may take a bit of time, sometimes up to two years. However, if the damage is more severe, it’s possible that the loss of function could be long-lasting.
With a spinal injury, certain risks become more common, including:
- Pressure sores from remaining in one position for long periods.
- Issues with body temperature regulation, leading to hypothermia or hyperthermia.
- Sudden spikes in blood pressure that can increase the risk of stroke.
- Uncontrolled muscle spasms that could lead to injury.
