What is Parkinson’s Disease?
If you’re new to caring for someone with Parkinson’s, learning more about it is always a good idea. As an introduction to the disease, we’ll explain what it is and the symptoms experienced.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition which causes parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years. According to Parkinson’s UK, there are around 145,000 people who live with Parkinson’s in the UK and it’s the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world.
Parkinson’s develops when dopamine cells in the brain stop working and are lost over time. When the brain cannot make enough dopamine to control movement properly, then symptoms begin to appear.
Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease
Many people will notice symptoms for some time prior to their medical diagnosis.
The three main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are:
- Slow movement
- Involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body (tremors)
- Stiff and inflexible muscles
That being said, there are more than 40 symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, and it affects everyone differently. Other physical and psychological symptoms include:
- Sleep problems
- Mild memory and thinking problems
- Balance problems
- Urinary problems or constipation
- Loss of sense of smell
- Difficult swallowing, chewing and speaking
- Depression and anxiety
