As a family member or caregiver, you’d do anything to ensure your loved one receives the care and support they need, especially after experiencing an acquired brain injury. At Bluebird Care, we understand the challenges that come with this journey, and we're here to make sure your loved one feels valued and comfortable in their own home.
What is an acquired brain injury?
An acquired brain injury, often called ABI, is any injury to the brain that happens after birth. This can occur due to various reasons, such as bumps or jolts from traffic accidents, falls, or even sports mishaps. Other causes might include tumours, infections, haemorrhages, or strokes.
ABIs can happen to anyone, regardless of age, and they can impact how a person moves, thinks, and feels. The effects can vary widely, depending on where and how severe the injury is. This means that different people might experience different challenges, and the duration of these challenges can also vary.
Common acquired brain injury symptoms
As you can imagine the symptoms of an acquired brain injury can vary quite a bit from person to person, and they can change over time. For instance, someone with a mild ABI might notice things like:
- Concussion
- Brief loss of consciousness (just a few seconds or minutes)
- Dizziness or trouble keeping their balance
- Memory or concentration difficulties
- Headaches
- Changes in mood or sleep patterns
- Increased sensitivity to light or sound
For those with a moderate to severe ABI, the symptoms can be more intense. They may experience the same issues listed above, along with:
- Profound confusion or agitation
- Slurred speech
- Convulsions
- Changes in pupil size
- Difficulty coordinating movements
- Loss of control over bodily functions
- Worsening headaches or episodes of nausea and vomiting
Additionally, an acquired brain injury can sometimes lead to feelings of depression or anxiety, as well as emotional responses that may seem out of character. We understand that these challenges can be tough not only for individuals but also for their families. Our Care Experts are here to provide the support and understanding you need as you navigate this journey together.
