Types of Arthritis

Arthritis is caused by an inflammation of one or more joints. Typically, it’s a lifelong condition that affects people of any age, even children. While arthritis is common as we age, it can be triggered by some autoimmune diseases, broken or fractured bones, and bacterial or viral infections.

That’s why it’s so important to understand which type of arthritis you have, as it will dictate the type of care you need.

There are many types of arthritis, but the three most common are:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that typically presents in people over 50. It gradually erodes the cartilage lining that prevents joint bones from rubbing together, leading to stiffness, pain, and loss of movement.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition that causes inflammation of the joint lining, resulting in constant pain, loss of function, and long-term joint damage.

People with rheumatoid arthritis are also at higher risk of developing problems with other tissues and organs in their bodies.

Juvenile Arthritis

Juvenile arthritis refers to any arthritis-related condition that develops in those under the age of 18.

The most common type of juvenile arthritis is known as idiopathic arthritis, where swelling of the joints lasts six weeks or longer.

Arthritis Care at Home

Arthritis is a chronic condition, but the right treatment and lifestyle changes can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and reduce the risk of any further damage to the affected joints.

In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medicines to ease pain and reduce inflammation. However, in more serious cases, surgery (such as joint replacements) may be necessary. As you can imagine, getting the right arthritis care becomes even more important post-operation as you work to regain mobility.

It’s also possible to address the symptoms of arthritis with mild to moderate exercise, such as low-impact aerobics, strength training, and motion exercise.

As part of our arthritis care services, our highly-trained care assistants can support you with a regime of gentle exercise, tailored to your needs.

Getting started

Our arthritis support is tailored to your unique needs, and our friendly, compassionate care assistants will help manage your symptoms in the comfort of your own home, preventing the need for costly or disruptive assisted living facilities.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to arthritis care, and we’ll work closely with you to understand your needs and preferences, which’ll form the basis of an arthritis support plan, designed to allow you to enjoy life on your terms.
